Dave Ramsey – Credit Card/Debt Collectors are SCUM
My hero, Dave Ramsey, tells of abusive practices and the violation of Federal law incorporated by debt collectors – particularly credit card debt collectors. Most people do not know that they have rights guaranteed to them by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and debt collectors knowingly and habitually break these laws in order to frighten them into paying.
IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO OWE MONEY!
Do not allow yourself to be lied to (example: “You’re going to go to jail if you don’t pay this” is one of their favorites!) or treated without the dignity you deserve.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FDCPA:
Collectors can NOT call you before 8 am or after 9 pm
Collectors can NOT threaten to have you arrested or charged with a crime if you dont pay
Collectors can NOT continue to call after you have indicated you want them to stop (record your conversation with them, tell them you ARE recording it, write the date and time down in a journal, and follow up with a certified letter stating they may no longer call.)
Collectors can NOT call friends, family members or colleagues repeatedly in order to get you to pay (they may call your acquaintances ONCE in order to track you down and may NOT mention that you owe money or give ANY information that would lead someone to believe that they are attempting to collect a debt.)

Heck yeah, I agree … Heck yeah, I agree 200%, I hope one day congress or someone wkll reign in these corrupt organizations and put them on trial.

He gives horrible advice, and it seems like he does really cater towards white trash hillbilies and perhaps certain suburbanites as well. I believe that he relies on the fact that a number of these people have a habit of shifting blame. Eg: I'm fat but it's not my fault. Its Burger King's fault. Its not because I have no self control, stuff my face, and lie on the couch all day. Someone else is always to blame for my own problems.
yeah I would have … yeah I would have to agree with you here. I think certain programs work well in certain cases. The problem with bankruptcy is that people abuse it like this other guy. They figure since they are going to file bankruptcy they might as well run there debt right through the roof first. BTW its only 7 years. Not that it matters. But yeah i filed bankruptcy a few years back but had the decentcy to pay off what I could before doing so. Mine was due to huge medical bills from a surgery I had.

Credit Card … Credit Card companies can lie to you and they do. One told me I had told these people I would make a payment next week 4 different times in the same month. That's a lie. I know because I never answer the phone. Then he told me I could NOT file bankruptcy and my only option was to set up some kind of payment to them today. I'm surprised he didn't tell me I would have to sell my blood or rob a bank so I could pay them.

oh yeah, you can still close the card btw. That legislation isn't law until next year, and is optional until then.

Actaully, until new … Actaully, until new legislation comes into effect they CAN change the contract if they want to. If you don't like it then you CAN close the card. Quit trying to blame other people/companies for your own self made problems.

Twice I had the … Twice I had the misfortune to get a new phone number as a land line that once belonged to a person with bad debt.
Debt collectors called me repeatedly, asking for the previous person connected with the land line, despite the fact that I insisted on more than 15 occasions, that I was not the person they were attempting to collect debt from.
I'm sure they harass innocent people like me all the time; accusing us of being someone else, despite our protestations.
